The focus was on ‘Sharing’. Throughout the past 9 sessions we have received multiple opportunities to enhance our practice when it comes to planning, creating and delivering a robust, interesting and multi-layered reading programme for our students. Naomi, Georgie, Toni and Vicki have been amazing at walking us through the RPI sessions which have been pretty intense at times.</span></p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-eaabd41e-7fff-4645-53c6-0df5172fa279"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 363px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="363" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/O4k5bK9UHVRRrILX2sKb3k-UvO4Tnd0c9u4N-K-qvwCrIL5k3t_T3gdiWSZe-wGA7ex2zcVVrFb--gRETbEQuB9PZPRaiNA-Oew2Mk03AZQB2OSoSrScx3S45F6ifZh_OumrdQHzUkpxQjUu8AJjlA4" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-07f8ec84-7fff-cc91-5748-0733b555299e"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">In regards to the focus on ‘Sharing’, we were reminded about the importance of student voice and how student blogs were a platform where students could share evidence of their learning, and share their authentic voice. Student blogs capture a record of student learning over time and is a great way for whanau to see and connect with what their children are learning at school. </span></span></p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-e92c382b-7fff-ee10-41b4-9c9d68318cd4"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 356px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="356" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/pdyNzhItDyAY_4RB3xV9xGrrn1j5UWCa5Qs4O9KzhcPal4thEpPEql-byAR-0YadD7Rl2AT6tSQg0kX9SrhQHJtQ9-4hwBnYbz0AS5Kwaq2HfOje6J2cI2IU4TFQki3u7sSzBxDwWTqACOwXCfbHLtM" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /> </span></span></span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img height="334" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/kW30BzkmRh0fdLfjAS8pVoeuo465I1mP889FLyzTignlpM4h6zidjNWZgdOnEWQ2KflyNUFHdh8s9MqTT8ShuR_U3vT5zDt1cfjDy5JYKO7CBFojQcLJjHBj4KW_NpaQn_UG0iMNWN-YhCdT66Hg2j0" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 0px; white-space-collapse: preserve;" width="541" /></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span id="docs-internal-guid-004c4db6-7fff-6fe3-9f96-de23553ec1e3"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Research also found that blogging frequency impacts on student learning. So this is something to keep in mind when encouraging students to post their learning on their blog. In our team of year 5 & 6 learners, one of our teachers (Ms Parrant) creates a holiday blogging programme for our students. We will be encouraging as many students as we can to continue blogging throughout the next holidays. </span></span><div><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-d88f0257-7fff-9ef3-5abe-b65f16148a3e"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 353px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="353" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/48zu6Jr8Fc7M48Ro3lxw6UFl0Sgmg1NeDfmX29H_XasBPw0KC-2n4AYUuV2xHflLPrsUQuxXvXm7wiDs3193NoO9wBZfsNEs2oBYcRnlDmbCoOSdpd88AXjuxRWcNAc9CmTGQ-6KhVO6nACmTnBhPs0" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-e938f144-7fff-d9b6-0de6-36efc8d4979e"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Once again we were reminded that we needed to design learning with the end in mind. This includes planning for ambitious outcomes, planning to use diverse texts, teaching learners to think critically and designing rich ‘Create’ experiences. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-9a42a7a6-7fff-142b-723c-d788c627ded7"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">We reflected on how feedback needed to be useful and practical for students and how we needed to plan time for this to happen regularly. Regular feedback to children is important. As teachers we need to organise a system to do this, so that it’s useful for our students but does not create too much extra work for teachers. Upon reflection, I provide lots of oral feedback (usually on the spot) for students and need to work on providing more written feedback on student work or on their blogs. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-ee79176e-7fff-4180-d076-4d8ae11004f7"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 364px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="364" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/84vr980V48VG7FirpnJVFspJpRNkDdDMxpnPyeN0joXoCFPH_8auXr2JfBEFuckv_IUzvUziAHjgsqvUZA5nkqkmP_nd2WQTrhxXT7NQ6gQ2804RD3c36Natx6cSJFeiaE2ykv9VtrbN3D-IHIa9lFg" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-b3586907-7fff-6f55-fe63-3d248f6489b9"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Tracking student workflow is something that I need to improve. This is something that I have been mindful of in my own class this year. The students in my literacy group are reading below their expected level, so it was important that whanau could be involved where possible. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-6ad6d140-7fff-9e01-ecc7-96f6e4abdf48"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 364px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="364" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/SIHl7jZKmLrCsj0P2ClQptpAHHl6UuE1AB_i-pygI2BbtSsbyk56T1K1Zb8DBu_IJqPtX7FwRx7zEqM5oJcUvPDyFwqI2KqDpCwUdDDGnGVjajN8Rhwnjqzr5W7Z4i7CvCCf7TVmWFkCf2a9-HKztr4" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-5fcebf50-7fff-cd90-1501-d4ba8378806f"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">I have tried to connect with as many parents as possible to encourage them to help their child read more at home. Even though my students are in year 6, I have a large group of students (15) who take book bags home with notebooks for parents to sign each time they read at home. I also encouraged parents to complete a google survey related to their child's reading during the last parent interviews. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-85bcf048-7fff-fdb8-5d03-1906ac9d9998"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 360px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="360" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_OTcWFoOVATBuUb_f1E8mU5pt6z7XxMDFWbLbs3V8zJ1HT0TNb1H4vgetQM3D2ILq1LNm77ONenvBNulEH4F0LEX2-EqUBQS3pQg60n2FGter2FcuFPmSNdZfnuDITi9EMZbPwe1P1p6RuFGcsaKDnQ" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-d2b7fddb-7fff-2e42-06c8-abf3dbdf59b7"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">I really like the following image below as this has been my inquiry focus this term which was to improve student engagement and achievement in literacy. It is about working with learners to establish an authentic audience for their learning outcomes. This is the whole purpose of the 'Share' part of our 'Learn, Create, Share' pedagogy. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Students need to see the purpose of posting their learning on their blog. The Holiday Blogging Summer Learning facilitators ensure that students receive comments each time they post on their blog. My goal is to use the Teacher Dashboard feature where the Edublog posts are visible to help me to leave comments on work that has been recently published. Another goal is to post constructive feedback more regularly on student blogs. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-6df44eb8-7fff-696e-88f0-7f142b603b73"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 365px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="365" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/gbQjSLFiSOCaomek73Dr_1CeViJHPR2dbE-JSJFrOVIj6bthOpLwVrDg-cgmsjs62UVuMo4jgV5vR4l1Sy3e04qdb6hHsyJQIrQJdgtwC9WgzR5KmWXc3dMw1Fj_dqfPMNYV7VLhJijPjHcgmS33j4Y" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-0d923ca1-7fff-a91d-01ea-63a9dffa6593"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Finally, upon completing the Manaiakalani RPI programme I need to consider how to implement the ideas, resources and tools that I have learnt to enhance my reading programme. The image below is a reminder that effective planning is essential to ensure that there are multiple opportunities for students to develop their vocabulary skills, critical thinking skills, student voice, reading strategies and more. This means that there needs to be careful layering across the reading model. </span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span id="docs-internal-guid-0993c4e8-7fff-ce95-89e5-5385f88334f9"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 369px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="369" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/M0CxTKIve-dPrmu3SybyjktaOT7gHNGG6J-Y4btBM0M2AWl7Z0tBzJIfR9xJ5I4IdIUO2zJHl7iwWejT-3tXNlwb2SmpcmknkAGSez32OLjxpP3GGdIXy6dsiOH9hGEsaCQzL3w56cPhB-6coerq-j8" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">I am very grateful to have been selected to be part of the Manaiakalani RPI programme even though I didn't really know what I was getting into. Thank you to our facilitators, special guest speakers, mentors and colleagues. I look forward to putting many of these new ideas and resources into practice as part of my reading programme. </span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><br /></span></span><p><br /></p><p><br /></p></div>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-38448701505275973762023-08-22T14:44:00.001+12:002023-09-12T13:52:52.964+12:00Manaiakalani RPI (Reading Practice Intensive) #8 - Creating<p> <span style="color: #1f1f1f; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Today, in session 8 of the RPI session, we discussed the importance of creativity in education. Dorothy Burt reminded us of the significance of the "Create" section of our Manaiakalani "Learn, Create, Share" pedagogy. She shared the consistent message from former students that creativity in their school experience has shaped who they are as people today.</span></p><span id="docs-internal-guid-fe67cec5-7fff-f6cc-b8ab-04f265d95b33"><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; padding: 0pt 0pt 18pt 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1f1f1f; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Being given the opportunity to use digital technology to expand their creative opportunities goes beyond traditional arts such as weaving, art, and painting. It also builds their knowledge of other creative tasks, such as creating an amazing website. Today’s RPI session provided opportunities to view and use ideas and resources to enable more creativity in our literacy classes. A.I. apps and online programmes such as Canva can be utilised as part of our literacy programmes. I used an A.I. app to create a neat image based on a poem. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; padding: 3pt 0pt 11pt 0pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #1f1f1f; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitHWTWb3WY0FNXAL5xtI8s53nkzdZ4LMBEkCPXNx3uBCg9hkyk5decH6ax07jxyp8lvfkaLrw7jLMdxxE5fL6Ldbfzu7vs_W88eNkU5XTNujLJx2jGb9mWC0hp0j-tL3q524VAX0NmAKWIG4fR4nDcMTnLSazlgrQqWesQU3TLxyFMXCueW70rPCFl8tPe" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="960" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitHWTWb3WY0FNXAL5xtI8s53nkzdZ4LMBEkCPXNx3uBCg9hkyk5decH6ax07jxyp8lvfkaLrw7jLMdxxE5fL6Ldbfzu7vs_W88eNkU5XTNujLJx2jGb9mWC0hp0j-tL3q524VAX0NmAKWIG4fR4nDcMTnLSazlgrQqWesQU3TLxyFMXCueW70rPCFl8tPe=w450-h253" width="450" /></a></div><br /></span><p></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="border: 2pt solid #000000; display: inline-block; height: 363px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="363" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/b3JwwvDCwQ3BspoTB9d-0pVkeQpiMXodNQAjTgPQjMS-4TtqEXeE0ouIGmAvaMSyNKWqkJ31niYyOp-V5EeVv8P5R4sLqwGVBG-SPrbk2UIeTI7AVlVV2FvQS0rlSrqed6GeYy1ejBJcXdv12rlg2JE" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;">We looked at ‘tighter’ to ‘looser’ ways to design and use create tasks. This is an area that needs to be implemented much more thoroughly as part of my literacy programme. I think that I place too much of an emphasis on the comprehension and understanding of the text for students. It would be helpful to focus on incorporating more word work or vocabulary practice with my students. A graph that was shared today reminded me of the vocabulary deficit of many of our students when they enter school. </span></p><span id="docs-internal-guid-4490eeda-7fff-802b-4836-16a332d79ab1"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; height: 359px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="359" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7qmIillCVTmE2ipi7gQwQUK_D8h8c3w5muF29qxV89UIn9CK9qPe-kAsAM5P6fT994-N4-rJTkiBHK6TRtOF15BYhuMB38A7AZcccfCuFIiM649u4XDm1fqDH8SYJii1d5ox-18Ky9t8v6G71merzDI" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The following is an example of a guided reading follow up task. Even though I feel that I do incorporate some word work into the guided reading follow up activities for students, I need to provide more opportunities for children to practise saying words out loud and recording themselves so that they can hear what they are saying and listen to whether it sounds right. I also need to provide more opportunities for students to practise vocabulary activities. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; height: 361px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="361" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/237nxkmfHSxAKbLfOpN1CpjI7oEBluXc9tHhJLqHUZchW1qH-N1ntWiMvUIIVrei7hggin3nUm48cor6yu31Bfe2DaJMU9QEWJNNU8p3O0Ckl7_20HLSrPg6hgLBWJ9gmk2g7IUupn8nRXE3O4supko" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We heard about using word walls/displays in class. I enjoyed the activity of pairing up with another teacher to work through some vocabulary activities. We also had the opportunity to create a follow on task based on a text for next term. I also realised that I needed to use some of the apps more effectively e.g. EPIC. There are many resources that relate to other curriculum areas on the site. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span face="Raleway, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span face="Raleway, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I also signed up my literacy class today for Literacy Planet which is another useful app. I could also make better use of the tracking sheets to monitor student completion of work. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span face="Raleway, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB6NUGJx4YN7A_Peh6YZadkjQQ1uX1UhGDnCSnSxWwRfocN_3eAk8aK3lrbefPjNt1zGaTZWS85ik1tcyeuo_7gXYPm1Xi5GoL5z2pkDi9bgIUyREgt2SgweyPZRlxFSi5kxkNw27ZRHCdum812FhcQ3qLNPTyRd7P_zZqVsnn09RXkBxBesDqfA0dpQ/s1390/lit%20prac.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="764" data-original-width="1390" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB6NUGJx4YN7A_Peh6YZadkjQQ1uX1UhGDnCSnSxWwRfocN_3eAk8aK3lrbefPjNt1zGaTZWS85ik1tcyeuo_7gXYPm1Xi5GoL5z2pkDi9bgIUyREgt2SgweyPZRlxFSi5kxkNw27ZRHCdum812FhcQ3qLNPTyRd7P_zZqVsnn09RXkBxBesDqfA0dpQ/w434-h239/lit%20prac.png" width="434" /></a></div><p></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span face="Raleway, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span face="Raleway, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>What did I learn that could be used with my learners? </b></span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span face="Raleway, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The writing practice and examples to inspire writing for students was excellent. She explained the importance of selecting from a wide range of both print text and digital text. Integrating the use of digital apps opens a world of learning opportunities to improve literacy skills for students. For example, using the voice typing app is a good way for readers to hear themselves talk and read aloud everyday. They can practice reading aloud to improve their enunciation of words and their oral fluency. </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; height: 279px; overflow: hidden; width: 520px;"><img height="279" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/fkY1W5hViTAameLDhtETSoyZQn4Wnhzf2LpJEPF-Qn7ZClGrMSq6QwhETzI_VCSW79293ccgm8Zr3L-4pDIgzWS8G1QVQbiL7ThIg-VZ1c1Q_RwYenuzqFNuIsivjH0lXiWa4MXnMQY9ifns5zXQJuA" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="520" /></span></span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?</span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We looked a little closer at the RPI workbook to plan ahead for one of our literacy groups. The focus on ‘coverage’ of multimodal text types, differentiated reading e.g. independent, paired and shared reading etc, as well as a focus on T-shaped literacy and text sets for groups was helpful. The RPI workbook provided one example of how to plan across a term to ensure that enough coverage of different text types was happening. </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; height: 280px; overflow: hidden; width: 429px;"><img height="280" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/DqxkNO3-om5nwSjLKheJR2JzAY2TMKKpX0AzGvPB4V-iWpkoEZ-n8sxRRX_1NUCMW2y2de8bza8ecAitbUIZ8BVC7RKh8jyFidsHSqryY2q2jYt66LMCx1K5rH3edbgLG9G0IipLjwhfnOotnaDuP3U" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="429" /></span></span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">What did I learn that could be used with my learners? </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I thought that the RPI workbook was useful for planning for a rich learning programme in literacy. In a busy term, the detailed planning overview with links to resources will help when thinking about planning to meet student learning needs and ensuring that there is coverage from a wide range of different texts and text types. </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I also learnt that we need to avoid limiting our learners and allow them to extend themselves where possible. It makes sense that students should learn how to read within the zone of proximal development i.e. read texts that are not too difficult or too easy, but it also makes sense that students need to be challenged by reading more difficult texts and work with others who share the same interests. </span></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; height: 270px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; overflow: hidden; width: 498px;"><img height="270" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/kBGtZjukq0sUN9LzIB3vk4OoYvANrnFUZ8aOcneItbo5ebW4slYU4E4zm1B9Y3gQmQLhDVEmc140A3AjRqvzaJbLm1S9Ygv5pgf9DPxlW4IiCVnIbkPC0acQRkWvCmfMlKmd50zqomsmxXqSpY6O9Fc" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="498" /></span></div><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">What did I learn that could be shared within my wider community, with either colleagues, or whānau/aiga? </span></p><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I think that the emphasis on multiple opportunities to read and the digital resources available to suit all learners was fantastic. Children’s interests need to be taken into account and cannot always be teacher directed which happens more than it should. The digital resources need to be shared with whānau/aiga. I think that some of the tips from the workshop should be simplified (summarised) and shared with parents on our class site. </span></p><div><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div></span>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-89240874093002230432023-03-07T14:27:00.002+13:002023-03-07T14:27:43.404+13:00Manaiakalani Reading Practice Intensive - Day 2<p> <span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">In today's workshop the focus was around knowing your learners as readers. </span></p><span id="docs-internal-guid-aa8373e7-7fff-9238-4174-286c682d5fcf"><br /><ul style="margin-bottom: 0; margin-top: 0; padding-inline-start: 48px;"><li aria-level="1" dir="ltr" style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; list-style-type: disc; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;"><p dir="ltr" role="presentation" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme ?</b></span></p></li></ul><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I learnt that taking into consideration the interests of the students is really important when designing a reading programme, even for the students who are struggling. The reading survey is a great way to capture the interests and attitudes towards reading of the students. A careful analysis of the PAT Reading data to identify common areas where there are gaps in learning is good practice. Another interesting thing that I learnt was the importance of assessment and the impact of effect sizes on student learning e.g. the larger the effect size, the greater the impact in a positive way it was for students overall. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-7f7067a1-7fff-8d6d-4a3f-e050a2cd4b2f"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; height: 332px; overflow: hidden; width: 650px;"><img height="332" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/iOZhXfXse5e9y9Ny4KOHOE8jF2Do83FQUaFrfaNw4uzVcxAGmlrAtytbPeV6C_lAMi3P1RuzmMbVufJ6a1AyGLW8wuVQNRM9025hYljY9Iowp6rJ-Gz63KJ01b7RdNsZFf6uwo_BCa7MYkcg6WKXeA0" style="margin-left: 0px; margin-top: 0px;" width="650" /></span></span></span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p><br /><ul style="margin-bottom: 0; margin-top: 0; padding-inline-start: 48px;"><li aria-level="1" dir="ltr" style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; list-style-type: disc; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;"><p dir="ltr" role="presentation" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?</b></span></p></li></ul><br /><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">To keep looking at new ways of designing the reading programme for students so that tasks are aimed more specifically at addressing student needs in a way that is engaging and interesting. We looked at what makes a good reader. We were also reminded that effective teaching is important for accelerated learning. We need to know who our learners are and what their needs are. A class survey to find out informal information e.g. student interests is important as we tend to focus on what the data tells us e.g. reading age and PAT scores. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="329" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/ms3xJ9Ztr4st21CFACzhEMrE-qXC78S27qFcAms1_ei5JbsfXg6BJziaeax8JmT8TOBzHIFRmvNaQkvdf0Khto5akVJbbg60ET43s3BLb_jvX04VaiqZQm-myIB6cD3xjJqoKRcY9Hn3MkpE7qJ1kvc=w607-h329" width="607" /></div><br /><br />Reading Pillars of Practice: This exercise was useful. I identified areas where I needed to focus more on e.g. I need to spend more time planning for Vocabulary as well as Comprehension. I need to look at how I can engage whanau more, especially with the lower literacy group. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="403" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/BF14XUAVm44mZ9wNv3uB3nRXu98JSwNLNYvWfsnBhMvt8AXNLIhazvHpoGOX2V8nJg3jlc5QELMxYBO1QmEXDc0EJ_tt1VJid8zCA4u6TCGJDm_ZgRXTYZlqigNjvZUa40YBLDMBFcqn2uiKhBbfEt0=w609-h403" width="609" /></div><br /><br />To be used with my learners: the class reading survey to check informal information about my students interests and attitudes towards reading etc. Establishing the ground rules for group talk was interesting. Something that I might do a little differently is to provide a little more student choice during reading sessions e.g. task selection. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="308" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/hQUWVVFfo3m10ZGd3jSdZR--IX3EQbqGHwhDyWiXju8_CBo4Wn68sT0GNcsR77wPWGMJ4MUDsWAilwHGESP9sXy5zf-fg6z1dSplth5gCHFmQauYDghWS6n3TLC5W-N08uB9Uai3tDJupYEcMaf3f-o=w559-h308" width="559" /></div><br />What I intend to share with others: Whanau - encourage whanau to make reading a focus at home e.g. share learning goals. Colleagues - share information gained from reading practice intensive.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="279" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/oEwLfHulw2CAV9R9Z-wfRu8UPvhjfXfUj1-e-8PtbFDOrJ36DVfybpsNAKnk7Kk2uhaIMcW13rsssAwJQcsgqvjnCjEQ7keqYr6kd15gHUycngJ4cAC_imTZNLADJXEEskskMcjlWkh9cX8uhVIXlpg=w500-h279" width="500" /></div>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-77006114893382368472022-08-19T18:07:00.001+12:002022-09-26T18:24:27.470+13:00Literacy group and reading levels. <p>For the past week I have been testing most of the students in my literacy class to check if they have made any progress in their reading levels. I used running records which is one way that our school assesses reading. It's a great tool to use when not only testing whether a child has made any progress, but also to observe reading behaviours of individual students. </p><p>I found that only 3 students out of a class of 25 had failed their running record test. Since the start of the year the levels of progress have been very different. Most of the students are reading below or well below their age. Here is a list showing the progress of students so far:</p><p>3 months progress = 2 students</p><p>6 months progress = 12 students</p><p>9 months progress = 2 students</p><p>One years progress = 6 students</p><p>More than one years progress = 1 student</p><p>We have 2 new students in our class since the tests were done. Some students attend the AWS reading programme with Ms Timmi and Ms Squires. Quite a few also attend reading support with Mrs Clarke and her volunteers. </p><p><br /></p>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-84110625881678121022022-08-01T14:10:00.003+12:002022-09-05T15:27:27.423+12:00Inquiry Focus in Term 3<p> This term I have decided to focus on a small group of students in my literacy class. These students are achieving below the norm in reading and writing. I see each student for guided reading at least twice per week. Some of them also attend AWS (a specialised literacy programme) and Reading Support. </p><p>We tend to focus on writing first thing in the morning. As most of the students in my literacy class are achieving well below in writing, it is important to build mileage by providing many opportunities to write. We often start with a discussion around a topic or interesting image, then we continue with a whole class brainstorm. The writing is co-constructed and sentences are written in large writing on the whiteboard. The class reads what is written out loud, then students copy this into their writing book. This is then typed into their copy of the writing task which is usually on a Google Slide presentation. </p><p>It is often difficult to find the time to conference for writing during the week. However, I always make it a priority to see my reading groups. Here are the reading ages from Term 1 and the start of Term 3 this year. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3RyIzdrSzBBRHSxUkeTU0oraxDk6NfcqWWjvUHz1Q8mrhq9UiBo5R5iKsoGmYr4TKEU9f0DnsZpac7pTqgddiYu3Xh7zEj-PrViOAgPUaz2j22JpliEeWqWjmEKYXbqaPUTA3W10OmQpuBBXjpdcLZyI5VuFXCCqTGG97Lt6i80MlCIj8jU3k-dPcQw/s1114/Screen%20Shot%202022-09-05%20at%202.48.58%20PM.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="690" data-original-width="1114" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3RyIzdrSzBBRHSxUkeTU0oraxDk6NfcqWWjvUHz1Q8mrhq9UiBo5R5iKsoGmYr4TKEU9f0DnsZpac7pTqgddiYu3Xh7zEj-PrViOAgPUaz2j22JpliEeWqWjmEKYXbqaPUTA3W10OmQpuBBXjpdcLZyI5VuFXCCqTGG97Lt6i80MlCIj8jU3k-dPcQw/w400-h248/Screen%20Shot%202022-09-05%20at%202.48.58%20PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /><p></p>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-50608269115037022972022-04-04T21:29:00.001+12:002022-08-08T21:34:31.046+12:00Inquiry PD @ PES Term 1<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgOoPQRrGPLVX9PKVIgAuXYj6kDap5Z48HRkG__gEhqULBQhWTgzFTIWb_GDQHvLmCJo-q5R0nBJmI40LbC8IH08h6GqGXQ0IdxgDPjzt1Qouqjxe_k0qhd3LQmoXcyn8Z7aoFASVVrZRVRT6DW3w0LqKGVC6TpioXueXYOr3wFNEfgwl8wP1rZmZ5UiA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgOoPQRrGPLVX9PKVIgAuXYj6kDap5Z48HRkG__gEhqULBQhWTgzFTIWb_GDQHvLmCJo-q5R0nBJmI40LbC8IH08h6GqGXQ0IdxgDPjzt1Qouqjxe_k0qhd3LQmoXcyn8Z7aoFASVVrZRVRT6DW3w0LqKGVC6TpioXueXYOr3wFNEfgwl8wP1rZmZ5UiA=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div><br /> This post is based on an activity we did together during a staff meeting in Term 1. It's been a relief to finally get back to school. This is the final week that learning opportunities will be made available online for our students in Team 4. We had our final Google Meet for the benefit of our students at home, last week on Friday. Reports have been completed, which was also an interesting task as we did not get to see quite a few of our students during the lockdown.</p><p>I<b>nquiry:</b> It was hard to assess students as most of my literacy class did not attend the meets or return to school. It was interesting to note that during the lockdown, the students in the higher ability literacy groups attended the meets more regularly and more often than those who were in the lower reading ability group. I did wonder if this was due to more parental support at home, or whether they were more independent and able to access their learning. Many students from the lower ability group also had behavioural and/or self management issues as well, so were probably less inclined to join the online learning meetings. A few were also ESOL students. </p><p>On Thursday we look forward to our end of year Awards day for the Junior and Senior School. I was actually surprised to feel quite relieved when I heard that both events would be held during the day. The Senior Awards are normally held in the evening so that our parents could attend. The first week was really about finding out where all the students were at in terms of reading in their new groups. </p><p>I have 6 reading groups (31 students) whose reading levels range from Red/Yellow level reading books to Purple/Gold readers. I see at least 3 reading groups once a day, so each reading group sees me for guided reading at least twice a week. So far my bottom three reading groups have started to take their reading books and spelling notebooks home. </p><p><b>What has worked well so far?</b></p><p>* Consistently being able to have all students reading with me at least twice a week. </p><p>* Students being engaged and focused on their reading during guided reading with me. </p><p>* Testing spelling words on a Friday. </p><p><b>What is not working too well so far?</b></p><p>* Monitoring what students are doing when they are not reading with me. </p><p>* Getting the reading/writing tumble up and running properly with the new groups. </p><p>* Lack of consistency with the Vocab Building activities across the groups.</p><p><b>Next steps: </b>Look at resolving the issues above. </p>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-89607633623342991312021-05-03T22:11:00.003+12:002021-05-03T22:11:47.037+12:00Inquiry Focus 2021 - Cross Grouping for Literacy<p>In Term One the reading data for Team 4 was quite interesting. Across our team of around 150 students, we had quite a large group of students who were reading 'well below' and 'below' their expected reading age. This was a definitely a problem so I decided to base my inquiry around this issue. </p><p>Rooms 6, 7, and 8 is mostly made up of Year 6 students with a large group of Year 5 students as well. During Term 1 the students all stayed in their home class for literacy throughout the day. In Term 2, I asked my colleagues if we could cross group our reading groups so that I could work with the students in my target group. </p><p>Today was the first day meeting with my 'new' literacy group. We tried writing about todays immersion assembly and that's when I realised how much help most of the students needed in this group. Tomorrow we will start with the guided reading lessons. It's going to be an interesting term. </p><p><br /></p>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-87208607799363223802021-03-22T12:07:00.003+13:002021-06-13T12:23:21.524+12:00Team 4 Reading Data and Stats March 2021<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Team 4 is made up of Year 4, 5 & 6 students. There are mostly Year 5 & 6 students in our team. When I looked at the reading data for Team 4 I did not differentiate between the different year levels, I only looked at the actual reading ages across the team. After collating the data, I created a couple of graphs based on the overall reading ages of the students in Team 4. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZHLQNao3iiQCG5z_OY1JAUSskGpPBHHqSRs3MJqmDUMg_z-Qfp1IdsfRRxqPkpL4bVfgnR2gh_3Wo3d0lqn8DEbHX8LX_sKpp4G10oqtD0epmTPDpn9KwlVBqxv3NKApip_qAA3FetwP8/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="377" data-original-width="605" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZHLQNao3iiQCG5z_OY1JAUSskGpPBHHqSRs3MJqmDUMg_z-Qfp1IdsfRRxqPkpL4bVfgnR2gh_3Wo3d0lqn8DEbHX8LX_sKpp4G10oqtD0epmTPDpn9KwlVBqxv3NKApip_qAA3FetwP8/w640-h398/Screen+Shot+2021-06-13+at+12.06.13+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8RO_hUs1yWFp9i3FasVkL6W5ojpe16oNKJpR0REBRB04f5jE0J7aJdnpr12WzzlESzvQVt1G7ikSqPlUZCwwLHDvmNKJbkoV6TrPaLU1agx2J25EXp1GXmxfzb36RjulKU2SJ-lOYFTZm/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="381" data-original-width="607" height="402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8RO_hUs1yWFp9i3FasVkL6W5ojpe16oNKJpR0REBRB04f5jE0J7aJdnpr12WzzlESzvQVt1G7ikSqPlUZCwwLHDvmNKJbkoV6TrPaLU1agx2J25EXp1GXmxfzb36RjulKU2SJ-lOYFTZm/w640-h402/Screen+Shot+2021-06-13+at+12.06.33+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The first two graphs show that we have a large number of students who have a reading age of 8 years old. The focus was on the 'Create' part of our Learn, Create, Share pedagogy. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Naomi Rosedale (from Woolf Fisher Research) opened the meeting with an interesting presentation around student design for learning. Apparently slide presentations are used far too often as DLOs (Digital Learning Objects) but there are opportunities to amplify learning through the use of this medium if used effectively. Screencasts could be used more widely in subject areas other than maths. MAPIC was also an interesting concept that was introduced: Multi-modal mapping of ideas, Amplification, Personalisation, Interaction and Coherence. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Teachers were then able to attend two workshops based around the idea of create to learn. Andrea Tele'a and I presented one workshop based around <a href="https://sites.google.com/s/1F1EfJitRsaVY5nN6D1Wzjjd3xaoHyy6I/p/1lbI50cq-RtoIarm0VxtvDJIJEMsmkrlJ/edit">PENN</a> (our Pt England News Network). PENN is an in-house news programme produced by staff and students and has been broadcast throughout the school four days per week since 1988. It is an opportunity to develop presenting, scripting, movie making and movie production skills. </span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">The following movie showcases some of our talented teachers who attended our workshop. They did not have time to practice and were literally in front of the camera on arrival to the workshop. Thank you teachers!</span></p>

Thanks to the teachers from Stonefields who led the workshop. </span></div>Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-65422498792638933622020-07-01T12:54:00.000+12:002020-07-01T12:57:48.652+12:00Reflection about BloggingThe number of posts on my personal inquiry blog has been pretty minimal so far this year. I still have a couple of reflections to post about my experience during the lockdown levels and its impact on teaching and learning experiences for students at our school. However, when I make comparisons between how much I am blogging and how much my own children (both in Year 6) are blogging, I am put to shame. <br />
<br />
Recently my children (boy/girl twins) reached a milestone of 200 posts each on their blogs. 200 posts!!! As a mum and teacher I was blown away by this. I noticed that a huge number of posts took place during the months of May and June. My daughter (<a href="http://pesjuliannal.blogspot.com/">Julianna</a>) has been quite consistent with blogging during the year. However my son (<a href="http://peskristopherl.blogspot.com/2020/">Kristopher</a>) somehow managed to post 230 times in the space of two months! <br />
<br />
Something had changed for my children and I wondered why. I guess that with the changes forced upon teachers during lockdown, they had to do things differently and students had to adapt to the change. <br />
<br />
For the first time students connected with their teachers from home via Google Meets. Students were forced to become more independent and lessons were modified and adapted to suit the interests and needs of the students. I noticed that a high level of multi-modal learning opportunities were consistently provided. Then when the students returned to school, this new style of learning and the expectation to post evidence of learning on their blogs (minus the Google Meets) continued. <br />
<br />
Another factor for the high level of engagement that I witnessed was that my children became more competitive. They soon realised that their teachers, parents and friends were beginning to take more notice of their posts which encouraged them to post even more. They’ve even decided to challenge one another to see who can do the most blog posts. I’m looking forward to seeing how many posts they will end up with at the end of the year. I’m so proud of them. In the meantime, I need to up my game and put up a few more posts of my own.Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-81239761458250971422020-03-27T11:11:00.000+13:002020-05-03T11:22:02.273+12:00Target Group for Inquiry Term 1 Results<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpEfhL4eHCMZOAQwvKAyggdMEuGplQtAa1sEj583HlJRO4aPedv8vPh5s9gGuVrxKQOl5f1-MPTpA4XR9bHZEz5zYUKuSSRaHAR2xOpKwUlabeI-esdw44oVE2IvBblMiBPwrN22A1vcRS/s1600/Screen+Shot+2020-05-03+at+11.21.13+AM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpEfhL4eHCMZOAQwvKAyggdMEuGplQtAa1sEj583HlJRO4aPedv8vPh5s9gGuVrxKQOl5f1-MPTpA4XR9bHZEz5zYUKuSSRaHAR2xOpKwUlabeI-esdw44oVE2IvBblMiBPwrN22A1vcRS/s640/Screen+Shot+2020-05-03+at+11.21.13+AM.png" width="640" /></a><br />

My inquiry this year is to focus on the students in the extension group who are achieving 'At' or 'Below Average' in the PAT Reading tests. The overall goal is to accelerate the achievement of students in literacy as well as to improve their critical thinking skills.Mrs Lagitupuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09632323738042607460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3415316366776072047.post-39594116601101157982019-10-21T16:09:00.000+13:002019-10-29T16:11:01.671+13:00Inquiry Update - Week 2 Term 4<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYuk5cbQLzYPkhcPaB0DCeKvA9Y1xv9GtPb319suiG4yKcOSvfQWSI6Tw-AVUGORs7nxkFPxX9SjVYs6NJuABgArr2V4n2KIEgmDooXiFAeX-Bdu71GU97IxhTsKL_COz3weWW4b8cX7X5/s1600/Term+4+Extn+and+Inquiry+snapshot.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYuk5cbQLzYPkhcPaB0DCeKvA9Y1xv9GtPb319suiG4yKcOSvfQWSI6Tw-AVUGORs7nxkFPxX9SjVYs6NJuABgArr2V4n2KIEgmDooXiFAeX-Bdu71GU97IxhTsKL_COz3weWW4b8cX7X5/s640/Term+4+Extn+and+Inquiry+snapshot.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
